Wintergreen Adaptive Skiing:
Thirteen Seasons of Challenge and Change

Wintergreen Adaptive Skiing is a non-profit, 501(c)3 corporation whose mission is to teach the joys of alpine skiing and snowboarding to individuals with a disability. Located next to the slopes of Wintergreen Resort in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, WAS offers fun, exhilaration and the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors with family and friends. Our students cover the spectrum of all ages and disabilities.
For thirteen seasons, WAS has believed and proved that “from the top of our mountain, all you can see is possibility.” In a world full of limitations, our students feel the wind on their faces, the thrill of a speedy ride down the slopes, and the cold of the snow right along with the rest of the world. Soldiers and marines, with bodies battered by war, discover that they can still be athletes. With our highly trained and compassionate staff along with an ingenious array of adaptive snowsport equipment, blindness, paraplegia, cognitive disorders and traumatic brain injuries are challenges we encounter, and overcome. In 2007, we started off a summer sports program with two weekends of adaptive paddling instruction and a river trip. Look for more information with a click on the”Boating” tab.

Not only do we welcome students with all disabilities, we welcome volunteers from all walks of life. Our popular Junior Instructor program recruits students from area high schools. Their youth and energy invigorates the program, keeps us hip and ensures that the walkway stays shoveled! Our Senior Instructors hail from a wide field of professions, including physical and occupational therapists, counselors, carpenters, artists and accountants. We are also developing a mentoring program, thanks to a grant from the Commonwealth Neurotrauma Initiative (click on the “Mentoring” tab for more details). United in a love of skiing and a heart-felt desire to reach out to others, we are a family of friends, amazed time and again at the deep satisfaction we receive from helping others discover their abilities.
