Wintergreen Adaptive Sports is a non-profit, 501(c)3 corporation whose mission is to teach the joys of outdoor sport and recreation to individuals with a disability. As of 2009, we offer instruction in alpine skiing, snowboarding and kayaking and canoeing.
Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, next to the slopes of Wintergreen Resort and adjacent to Wintergreen's beautiful Lake Monocan, WAS offers fun, exhilaration and the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors with family and friends. Our students cover the spectrum of ages and disabilities.
For fourteen seasons, WAS has believed and proved that “from the top of our mountain, all you can see is possibility.” In a world full of limitations, our students feel the wind on their faces, the thrill of a speedy ride down the slopes, and the cold of the snow right along with the rest of the world. Soldiers and marines, with bodies battered by war, discover that they can still be athletes. With our highly trained and compassionate staff along with an ingenious array of adaptive snow sport and boating equipment blindness, paraplegia, cognitive disorders and traumatic brain injuries are challenges we encounter, and overcome.

Scheduled by appointment only, our lesson roster fills quickly, so be sure to call us at 434-325-2007 or email us at

WAS has been especially committed to serving our injured military personnel retuning from the global war on terror. This year we will be conducting our 6th annual Learn to Ski and Snowboard Weekend. Starting in 2009, WAS offered mid-week lessons at no charge to a select group of warriors from the Martinsburg, West Virgina VA hospital. In the summer, we have conducted 2 Wounded Warrior Boating Weekends and are planning now for our third annual event in the summer of 2009. We are also developing a mentoring program. Through grants from the Commonwealth Neurotrauma Initiative Trust Fund of the Virginia Dept. of Rehabilitative Services and from Disabled Sports, USA. WAS in continuing to develop a major program for individuals with recent traumatic spinal cord or brain injuries and for children and teenagers with disabilities. We have seen many times the power of an adult role model and guide and are committed to developing and fostering these relationships. Interested in mentoring? Click on the "Mentoring" tab.
Not only do we welcome students with all disabilities, we welcome volunteers from all walks of life. Our popular Junior Instructor program recruits students from area high schools. Their youth and energy invigorates the program, keeps us hip and ensures that the walkway stays shoveled! Our Senior Instructors hail from a wide field of professions, including physical and occupational therapists, counselors, carpenters, artists and accountants.
Everything we have been able to accomplish, we have done through the support of individuals, corporations, foundations and our major fundraising event, our Vince Fiore Memorial Mardi Gras Celebration. Click on the "Mardi Gras" tab for information about this, one-of-a-kind day of hilarity or on our "Info and Applictions", "Donate Online", or "Our Sponsors" tabs for information on how you can get involed and can support this very worthwhile cause.
